The fact is that each year, China and India will together produce nine million graduates...
This raises a fundamental issue for us, which is this: How can we best help each NUS graduate to stand out, to be competitive and successful?
Last year when I was in Nanjing, I had dinner at a well-known restaurant. The wall murals showed famous scholars through the ages, preparing for the imperial examinations.(注,图上画的是头悬梁锥刺股)
If we believe these enduring role models tell us something of the culture, it seems clear that NUS students should not try to compete based on hours of study time clocked. Our students must also develop qualities and skills that will differentiate them, that will help set them apart.

Some of you - a minority, I suspect - have found answers that satisfy you, and you are ready to pursue careers that seem entirely right for you - in medicine, or science, or business, or teaching, or public service. The rest of you are still searching for answers. Some of you are still searching for a job. Let me reassure you, and your parents: this is fine. Over the next couple of years you will test jobs or courses of study to see if they truly lead you where you want to go. You will have a much happier life if you can find a calling that truly excites and inspires you. Take your time, and find your passion.
And remember that the world is now your community. Serve it well.
